Alexander Kluge: Cultural History in Dialogue provides public access to key documents in video, film, audio, and text by the German writer, filmmaker, cultural theoretician, and public intellectual.
At the core of the collection is a series of conversations, originally aired on German television, between Alexander Kluge and other major figures in late-20th and early-21st-century German cultural and intellectual life, as well as international scholars working in this tradition: playwright Heiner Müller, writer Hans Magnus Enzensberger, social philosopher Oskar Negt, and film historian Miriam Hansen, among others. Subtitles and transcripts of most of these broadcast interviews are included in German and English translation, and they are fully searchable.
In addition to the conversations, Alexander Kluge: Cultural History in Dialogue makes freely accessible a collection of Kluge’s short films, as well as his monumental effort of 2008 to film Marx’s Capital, and his newest long film, Cosmic Miniatures, from 2024.
In 2018, Cornell University hosted the international conference Alexander Kluge: New Perspectives on Creative Arts and Critical Practice. The conference presentations are available for viewing online.
